Mayan civilization
The civilization which is one of the wold's better known ancient
civilizations is that of the Mayan. The mayan culture had its origins
in 200 B.C. The classic period of the Mayan was 300 B.C. to
to approximately 900 A.D. During their classic era they were
accomplished astronomers, gifted mathematicians who developed
the concept of zero. computed a calender more accurate than the
one in use today, and developed a true writing system which was
based upon symbols and phonetics. The books the Mayans created
were called codices- the plural of codex. They were made either
from deerskin or bark of the amatl- native fig tree. (See Codex)
