Course Description:

This course provided an entry-level introduction to the basic principles of Command Line Operations utilizing Disk Operating Software (DOS) and diagnostic software.  Instruction covered the following areas: introduction to DOS; managing files, disks and directories; batch files; controlling peripherals; utility programs; telecommunications; disk maintenance, optimization and data recovery; desktop management and hard disk backup. Students used Disk Operating Software (DOS), diagnostic software, microcomputers and peripherals. The course is a “Foundation course” for Computer Technology Programs.

SPECIFIC COURSE OBJECTIVES: 

Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to:

1.                Follow safe practices when using PCs and peripheral equipment

2.                Appropriately apply fundamental DOS commands

3.                Appropriately apply advanced DOS commands

4.                Perform disk, directory and file management functions

5.                Perform disk maintenance, optimization, backup and data recovery functions

6.                Control peripheral equipment

7.                Configure system environment

8.                Relate skills and knowledge to business and industry applications

Reading

Students are responsible for reading each Ch.  before coming to class!

 

Participation

There are no excused absences and there is no way to make up missed classes. As in the working world, punctuality and attendance are key elements to success.

 

Homework and Lab Work

Students are responsible for completing homework for each Chapter before coming to class! There will be approximately 53 homework and lab assignments [hands-on-exercises] assignments given this semester. Homework is based upon the questions from the end of each Chapter of the required textbook.

 

If you do not do the homework, you probably will not do well on the tests. Many questions that appear on the tests come directly from the homework assignments.

 

Lab assignments are from the both the Textbook at the end of each Chapter and Homework is worth 10.0% of your final grade.

 

Quizzes

There will be approximately 6 quizzes given during this semester. Quizzes are worth 15.0% of your final grade.

 

Mid Term Exams

The Mid-Term exam(s) is worth 25.0% of your final grade.

 

Final Exams

The Final exam(s) is worth 25% of your final grade.

Dropping from Classes

The student is responsible for understanding the procedure for dropping a class. If you fail to attend classes but do not follow the procedure for dropping the class, you may receive a failing grade. THE DEADLINE FOR DROPPING AN ROP CLASS FOR COLLEGE CREDIT IS September 5thh, LISTED ON YOUR YELLOW COPY OF YOUR REGISTRATION RECEIPT!  If you wish to withdraw from the college (i.e., drop all your classes), contact the cashers office. Failure to properly withdraw from classes can have a detrimental effect on your grade point average and your future educational goals.
