There are many environmental organizations in California, ranging from citizens' groups focusing on a local issue or issues, through statewide organizations, to national organizations active in California.  There are also numerous government agencies, both state and federal, that have the task of regulating, monitoring, or studying one or more aspects of the environment. Many of these groups are excellent sources of information, accessible either through their web pages, literature produced by the organization, or simply by contacting the organization and speaking to someone who knows about an issue.

  • National Environmental Organizations active in California include the Sierra Club, National Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, and others.  Many have extensive web pages with a great deal of information.

  • Statewide and Local Environmental Organizations often have a tremendous amount of information on a variety of environmental issues, and may be the best source for information about a particular region.

  • Government Agencies, Federal and State, have responsibility for managing natural resources and enforcing environmental laws and regulations.  Many are the best source of information on their jurisdictions, and many have excellent resources on their web sites.

The grizzly bear is the state animal of  California, and is the bear on the California flag.  There are no grizzly bears in the wild in California today.   The last one in the state was killed in 1922, or possibly in 1924.
