RE: Bonnie and Prerequisites [HAPP-L]
Bonnie,
For freshman anatomy and physiology, our prerequisite reading score is 420
on the SAT and 400 math or equivalent ACT scores. These are not very high
but I found that these scores correlated to a good success rate in our
course. I examined 5 years of students(about 1200 students) and compared
their SAT scores to their grade in A&P. If the student had these scores or
higher, 78% passed. Of those with lower scores, 78% failed. I found a
stronger correlation between their math score and success than between
their reading score and success, although reading was high as well.
If the student has the low SAT, ACT or institution scores, we require that
they complete developmental reading and/or developmental math classes
before taking A&P. It seems that they need an A in these developmental
classes to translate to success in A&P. We are now looking at these
statistics as we have had this program in place for six years.
We require high school biology and recommend high school chemistry also. If
the student has had little science in high school or no biology, we
recommend that they take our one semester human biology before enrolling in
A&P.
Hope this helps.
