Re: serum from blood sample [HAPP-L]
I worked in a hospital biochem lab for a while, and we centrifuged the
clotted blood to separate out the serum, just as Sandy has said.
It occasionally happened that some fibrin would continue to separate out
after centrifugation, leading to 'clotted serum'. (Since serum is supposed
to be plasma with the clotting material removed, I'm not sure what to call
this - 'plasma lite'?) We used to put a sterile applicator stick into the
sample and twist it 'round, essentially wringing the serum out of the
fibrin. If this happens, it might be kind of cool for the students to see
the consistency of the fibrin.
