Physiology lab. [HAPP-L]
Friends, as most of your are experiencing, enrollment numbers in A and P
courses have been going up for the last decade. This has made staffing in
these areas challenging at best. At the university of Portland we teach
separate A and P courses. Our enrollment numbers would necessitate
teaching about 3 more physiology labs than we can currently staff. We
have tried adjucts, but most are more trouble than they are worth and
trying to staff these courses on a yearly bases has been almost
impossible.
Therefore, we are exploring the possibility of teaching 1.5 hour
physiology that are more clinically based. Currently we teach 3 hour labs
and have a strong investigative component that generally requires 3 hours
and sometime more to complete. These labs are not wet labs and we use
no fluids-human or otherwise. The more clinical labs would be more
focused on current diagnostic tools and techniques used by health care
professionals (i.e. EKG, EMG, BP, HR, resp, etc), the science behind the
technique (i.e. exactly what are you measuring) and applications to
clinical conditions.
This is still inthe development stages, but I thought I'd ask the HAPS
brain trust for comments and suggestions.
Thanks
Terry Favero
