Re: Clinical relevance of bony landmarks [HAPP-L]
The sacral hiatus is an important site for epidural injections.
A couple more ideas: The greater functional skeleton (including cartilage)
is important. For example, understanding how ventilation occurs depends on
one understanding about the intercostal cartilage.

I'm not a clinician of course, but if I remember right, an I.M. injection
in the shoulder is supposed to be given a certain number of finger-breadths
down from the acromion. I think gluteal I.M. injections are given in
reference to one of the landmarks in order to avoid damage to the sciatic
nerve. The ischial tuberosities are important obstetric landmarks. Chest
compressions are supposed to be done with the hand applied at least two (?)
finger-breaths superior to the xiphoid process. The spinous process of
vertebra C7 (vertebra prominens) is an important landmark for counting up
or down from there to other vertebrae.
Others may be able to elaborate or improve the accuracy of these, but these
are some examples than come to mind.
