It is with great sadness that I write to tell you of the death of Sandy
Grabowski, a founding member of HAPS, one of the first editors of the HAPS
Educator, and a Past President.    I'm sure all of you who knew Sandy are
as saddened by this news as I am.  I am copying here her obituary sent to

Dr. Sandra Reynolds Grabowski, 59, of 304 Overlook Drive, West Lafayette,
passed away Monday afternoon, January 20, at Home Hospital, from
complications resulting from cancer of the appendix. Since 1977 she served
as an Instructor in Purdue's Department of Biological Sciences. Her
husband, Zbiginew, who survives, is a Purdue Professor Emeritus of Physics.
      Born and raised in the Chicago area, Dr. Grabowski did her
undergraduate work at Purdue, graduating in 1965 with Honors in Biology.
She subsequently received an award at Purdue for outstanding research by a
graduate student in Biological Sciences. In 1973 she was awarded the
doctoral degree in neurophysiology, followed by three years of postdoctoral
work at Purdue, all in electrophysiology of visual systems.
      A science education author of international reputation, Dr. Grabowski
was co-author with Gerard Tortora of multiple editions of a major teaching
text: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, followed by multiple editions
of a second text: Introduction to the Human Body. Translated into French,
Spanish, and Japanese, the highly regarded texts are used throughout the
world.
      For 25 years Dr. Grabowski taught BIOL 301/302, Human Design: Anatomy
and Physiology, for a wide range of academic programs within the
University. She eventually was voted one of the top 10 teachers by students
in the School of Science. Nationally, she was a founding member and served
as President of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, having been an
Executive Board Member and Editor of their news magazine. She was active in
the National Science Teachers Association, Society for College Science
Teachers, American Association of Anatomists, Association of Women in
Science and the Association of Biology Laboratory Educators. She was a
member of the Lafayette Indiana Rotary Club.
      At Purdue, Dr. Grabowski participated in WISP: Women in Science
Programs, chaired or was a member of numerous committees and served as
adviser to various student organizations.. In private life the Grabowskis
would have celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary this Thursday, January
23rd. Dr. Grabowski had a love affair with anything that suggested an
aquatic environment, maintaining with her husband residences on Lake Shafer
and in Florida. She was an exuberant tennis player, swimmer, boater and
health advocate.
      Surviving with her husband are her father, Glenn E. Reynolds of
Elmhurst, IL and a sister and brother-in-law, Susan Reynolds Simon and
Richard Simon of Indianapolis. Her mother, Helen M. McDaniel Reynolds,
preceded her in death.
      A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25th at 1:00
P.M. at the Faith Presbyterian Church, 3318 State Road 26W in West
Lafayette. In lieu of flowers donations in her name made to the Purdue
Foundation and sent to the Department of Biological Sciences, 915 W. State
Street, West Lafayette, IN  47907-2054; the Purdue Foundation and sent to
Barbara Clark, Director, Women in Science Programs, 150 N. University St.,
West Lafayette, IN 47907-2067; or the Lafayette Indiana Rotary Club
Foundation and sent to David Landgrebe, Treasurer, 1633 Western Drive, West
Lafayette, IN  47906 are suggested.
