I feel compelled to respond at least to this part of the article
"About half of all grades at Pomona, Duke, Harvard and Columbia are in the
A range. "
This may be true for grades in general, but it is definitely not true for
grades in the science courses here at Columbia. In response to students'
suggestions, their transcripts now include the % of A's that were given in
each course. So when seeing a grade of B on the transcript, a reader
would know whether this is a B in a course where 95% of the students got
an A, or one in which only 20% got an A.
My fall Physiology course had a distribution of
A 27
B 49
C 18
D 2
F 1
The first semester of our intro bio sequence for this past fall -
A 32
B 40
C 21
D 4
