Wouldn't stress on the ligament result in thickening of the bone at its insertion, rather than resorption of bone?

I've been led to believe that stress on bones stimulates bone growth/development and that the LACK of stress results in bone resorption, as per the old adage, "If you don't use it, you'll lose it."

Is my thinking in error here?
