muscle coverage [HAPP-L]
Dear HAPS people,
I apologize if this topic has been covered before, but I'm struggling with how to cover the muscular system in my 2-semester A&P course and would like to hear about what other, more experienced people do with this (potentially) massive amount of information. I'm experimenting with having students learn muscles on models; with cat dissection (we don't have cadavers); and with the (wonderful) "manniken" clay models. I'm fairly new to teaching A&P (this is only my second go-around with A&P I lab, and I'm the only one teaching it here), and have been puzzling over what is the best use of lab time, and what is a reasonable amount of material to require of fairly motivated students who are encountering this information for the first time. I had alloted just two lab sessions (and no lecture time) for muscles (plus a 3rd on muscle physiology), which means that students would have a total of 2 weeks to master information for the lab practical. They can work in the lab at any time
, !
but I'm still having a hard time gauging what is a reasonable amount to require them to learn, also when quality of learning might be sacrificed for quantity.
I'd grateful if some of you could share information on:
* how many lab sessions (or weeks of the semester) you devote to muscular system anatomy
* what teaching approaches you use (dissection? models? other?)
* roughly how many muscles you require students to ID?
* how do you approach having students learn origin/insertion/action- of how many muscles?
Thanks for any information you can share. I do remember some lists of muscle ID requirements posted last year, and those were very helpful.
Nina
