WBC's and iron [HAPP-L]

Hi gang

Recently a friend of mine was told his blood cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglycerides were too high, and he went on an extreme change of diet (he's already fairly lean, exercises LOTS, and is a bit of a health nut).  But over a three month period he lost a bunch of weight (is now very lean), and on a follow up appointment, was told his blood lipid levels were OK, as was his blood pressure.  He was also told that his white blood cell count was down, and to stop taking his iron supplement (don't know why the iron supplement).  Any guesses as to why that recommendation?

My guess is that he is in negative nitrogen balance, and is in a malnourished state, hence the low white cell count.  I'm also guessing that his albumen and transferrin levels are depressed, hence the recommendation to stop the iron supplements.

What say any of you?
