I'd just like to offer further endorsement of the camera+adaptor approach; some Canon consumer digital cameras have a filter adaptor ring that can be used to mount a microscope adaptor that then fits into the microscope eyetube. The combination is quite satisfactorily solid; there's no feeling that the camera is being hung by some fragile part. Assuming sensible choices about camera settings, the image quality is limited by the microscope and subject.
