Re: [HAPS-L] using two textbooks instead of one...

I would love that option, Don! What a great idea! Now how do I sell
that idea to my administration.....?

I teach a two-semester integrated anatomy & physiology course at a community college. Lectures and labs are not linked. In other words, students may have different instructors for lecture and lab.

My colleagues and I have very different ideas about how to judge a textbook. This may lead to more than one textbook being used in our

A & P course. Has anyone in a similar situation used more than one book before? If so, has it worked out or has it been too problematic

for students?

For about 10-15 years now, we moved away from having our A&P I students purchase the same textbook. We often use different textbooks, but since none of us teach "out of a textbook," it really doesn't matter. Also, students from other campuses of our college may also have yet even different textbooks so when they take A&P II with us, it doesn't cause them any problems.

Since we don't teach "out of a textbook" in A&P II either, we often welcome various textbooks among our students so that they can share the best of each textbook. Do authors sometimes give conflicting presentations? Yes. But that adds to the class discussions as to which presentation gives a better description of the

physiological process. In the real world, people have different opinions. In the scientific world, it is no different. Our students experience this aspect before they complete our A&P II sequence.

I, personally, love it.
