I guess the main problem is that you have to "sell that idea to [your] administration." We don't. Each faculty member is free to choose his or her own textbooks. In courses with multiple sections taught by many instructors, there are some who attempt to come to a common consensus as to which text to use, but it is not mandatory.

In our department, however, the full-time faculty do select a single textbook for all of our part-time faculty so that it minimizes ordering problems through our bookstore, especially if there are any changes in teaching assignments.
