[HAPS-L] Urea in hand lotions

Dear Hapsters,
We were just studying metabolism and urea as a metabolic waste product,
and one student asked why urea would be a component of hand lotions. I
was quite surprised and certainly didn't know why. My web search turned
up the fact that it is sometimes used as a "rehydrating agent", but I
could not find out how it would work in that way. Can anyone shed some
light on this?
