I agree.  When there are common "lay" terms for an item, I make it clear as
to which terms I will or will not accept.  Besides, "hip bone" is incorrect
grammar.  "Hip" is a noun, not an adjective.  I suppose you could say,
"Hippal bone" or "Hippic bone" - now that sounds amusing.

You'd better tell that to the editors of the Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. It has a subentry, "hip joint," which I should think no less grammatical than "hip bone."  The editors of Gray's Anatomy will also need to be informed that their book is ungrammatical. 

Do you suggest we also speak of "wristal bones"?
