Re: [HAPS-L] Hip Bone?
You really want me to shield my weapons? or would you rather that I sheathe
my weapons? ; -) Lighten up. You are both right. Some nouns are used as
adjectives. And some adjectives are used as nouns. (diabetic, chiropractic)
I just try to avoid that when possible with my students. I try to make them
aware of language and listen to what they speak and write. Too many errors
are made because of carelessness. By the way, if hip bone is a compound
noun, don't you have to spell it hipbone as one word? or as hip-bone with a
hyphen?

Charlene,
I beg to disagree with your call on the grammar involved. Hip bone is
not "agrammatical" because "hip" is an adjective. (If you speak "jazz,"
you'll find that 'hip' is indeed an adjective, but that's another
discussion.)
Hip bone is a "compound" noun - like contact lens or gas grill or diesel
engine. Plain and simple.
Grammar police, back off and shield your weapons.
