It's perhaps worth noting that a lot of useful art has aged into the public domain.  The attached image was published in 1906.  In fact, looking at the artwork in current textbooks, I see many views that nineteenth century or earlier artists made "standard." 
Capturing these images is pretty straightforward.  Using a camera instead of a flatbed scanner preserves the bindings of old books.  If anyone is interested in suggestions on how to do this, please speak up...
