Re: [HAPS-L] prounciation of medical terms ..was Misunderstood "misunderstood" words

Anyways, it might be informative to go to a medical term pronounciation website at
http://www.merck.com/mmhe/resources/pronunciations/index/a.html

This is where I send my students if they get caught up in word sound rather then word meaning.

That's a great site, Tom -- even though I don't trust them on all the pronunciations I've heard so far. Having gone through a doctoral program in parasitology, TA'ed it, and attended years of parasitology conferences, I just can't buy "tenny-ah sag-i-na-ta" (hard "g") for Taenia saginata. It's always been "tay-nee-ah" or "tee-nee-ah" for the genus and "sadj-i-na-ta" (as in "sagittal") for the epithet. Some of their pronunciations are contrary to anything offered by Taber's, Stedman's, or Dorland's.

They pronounced abruptio placentae as "a-BRUP-she-oh pla-SEN-ta," ignoring the -ae ending on placentae. Wouldn't most agree that it should be "pla-SEN-tee"?
