Eponyms are tricky because (1) medical dictionaries rarely give any pronunciations for them and (2) so many originate in languages other than English that their pronunciation isn't necessarily intuitive from their spelling, at least among us EFL sorts. I pronounce the aforesaid name "RON-vee-yay" and hope that's close enough for government work (since I teach for the state). One that I'm not at all sure about is the Wernicke's area (and Wernicke's aphasia, etc.). German was my graduate school language and makes me inclined to pronounced this something like "VAIR-ni-kez," but that Merck site pronounces it "WUR-ni-keez."

It annoys me that the medical dictionaries also rarely give pronunciations for plurals, for the second word in a binomial, and for muscle names.

Great strides today putting together my 2008 medical pronunciation workshop. I have more than enough PPT slides now to fill a standard time slot, so I'll do some culling and prioritizing before then, and probably will replace some with better examples that come to mind in the interim.

Now it's off to the second of the season's holiday parties. Occasionally I do tear myself away from the keyboard for a couple of hours.
