RE: [HAPS-L] mnemonics

Hi All, Is It Fall Yet?

I simply mention that there are websites with lots of mnemonics, including
the ribald ones and that some remember these better.  I always encourage
my students to make their own (few do) and sometimes I make an assignment
for one.  My favorite from last year is for the anatomical systems:   

I Can Still SMile UNDER Vast Loads.  
     ?Lesley Robinson, Chatham University, Fall 2006 (this was also poetic
irony given the person hired to teach my labs)
     Integumentary, Cardiovascular, Skeletal, Skeletal Muscular, Urinary,
Nervous, Digestive, Endocrine, Reproductive, Ventilative (sorry I prefer
to rename respiratory), & Lymphatic.

Here's a favorite I made up when I was in TX (Hi Russell!): 
Main elements of your body:  You CHO CaN P a lot of NaClS, Mggie K. 
= You sure can micturate a lot of sodium chlorides, Maggie Kay:  
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Calcium, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Sodium, Chloride,
Sulphur, Magnesium, & Potassium.

I tell them that I don't care if their mnemonics are dirty, but I won't
post them.  Some of my students inform me how dirty many students
are--something I wish to know nothing about.  

In intro bio, there was actually a complaint about me mentioning where the
G-spot was--I was showing embryology picts of the sexes and the
equivalents (g-spot & prostate, labia majora & scrotum, etc.; and the
hallaballoo was three weeks later mostly from two students not in my
class--and NO ONE had the decency to talk to me face to face).  I was the
last one to "hear about the problem."  I feared to ask the intro class,
but many came to college with never having had any sex ed, much less any
other decent biological training...

The maturity level has been quite astounding...and my thoughts about "PC"
have always been nothing but ribald.  LOL
