RE: [HAPS-L] What is anatomy?

Correct Pat. Using John Waters' original "Learning to make predictions
about the function of a novel
> structure, based on what is known about similar structures (the >
ability to generalize), How is this: can the student correctly predict
the structures and functions of most of the likely components of a fully
movable joint?

Certainly teaching them to understand is the goal, but in practice I
think using 'understanding' as a student outcome is too imprecise. I
always ask myself what the students would do to demonstrate this
understanding, and make that the outcome I ask them to fulfill. After
all, that's the only way I can assess their understanding - and why say
I'm teaching for something I can't measure?

I think John hints at understanding in his 2nd but even more clearly so
with his 3rd point.

I certainly will take a bit more time on this but my first reaction
would be to add the term "understanding"...students believe if the
memorize everything they know anatomy but ask a question that requires
comprehension and they fall of the edge....
