Re: [SUSPECTED SPAM] Re: [HAPS-L] retention rates

108 - 120 in the fall, 88 - 98 spring for last 3 years. No preq., can be in developmental math, reading, and/or writing. Meeting is tomorrow, but suspect administration wants only C's or better at the end of the course. I haven't calculated anything since I'm still typing with one hand. The last time we had this discussion, about 5 years ago, retention for A & P I was about 50%, including withdrawals. I collected data and took the issue to academic council, asking for stratification (completion of reading). Nothing was accomplished. My boss suggested that I change the textbook. We had done that within the last year, so I asked him what criteria he wanted me to use. He didn't have an answer so I didn't take it to all my colleagues at the satellite campuses. It is difficult to get everybody to agree and I wasn't going to revisit the issue without administrative guidelines!

Just curious. How many students do you usually have in these courses? What
prereqs if any, did they have? By retention, do you mean how many make earn
a C or better from day one? This data would include all D and Fs as well as
withdrawn students? I ask this since I teach at a 2 year school and my
numbers are more in the 60-70 percentile when one counts in withdrawn
students into the data.
Thanks for your answers, Ken M Florence-Darlington Technical College

Subject: [SUSPECTED SPAM] Re: [HAPS-L] retention rates

Data from my institution (4-year liberal arts institution) may be aberrant
from community college data.

Human Anatomy: 98% retention rate (over 30 years)
Neuroanatomy: 99% retention rate (over 30 years)
Histology: 100% retention rate (over 30 years)
Kinesiology: 99% retention rate (over 30 years)

If you need any clarification on these data let me know Mary Lou.
