We had problems with cats from
Carolina as well. We were getting the preskinned, no formaldehyde
preserved cats. When I asked them why they weren't keeping for the
two semester like they used to (the insides were literally turning to
mush, and the muscles were as you described), I was told that they first
freeze the cats, then preserve and inject (we were having trouble with
the injected vessels as well).
Long story short, we switched to Fischer cats. These are also in a
non formaldehyde preservation and have worked well.
Good luck!

I've had problems with Carolina's fetal pigs as well -- poor
preservation, quick deterioration, blown vessels and body cavities full
of latex, etc. -- and switched to another company this year.
