Here’s a report of a detailed study of hyoid embryogenesis in human fetuses:

This shows a replica of the first page as published. It includes both the Summary in English, and the Zusammenfassung auf Deutch.

Apparently it forms largely from three cartilage “models”, the body and the two major horns.
