Bartolomeo Eustachi
(1513?-1574)
Italian anatomist and physician
Eustachi is considered
by many to be the first comparative anatomist and,
along with Vesalius
and Falloppio,
the founder of modern human anatomy.
He was the first to describe the teeth in detail, including their basic
composition of enamel and dentin. He published the first
accounts of the adrenal gland and thoracic duct as well as the first accurate
description of the auditory tube ("Eustachian tube") which links the middle ear
to the throat.
