Paul Broca (1824-1880)
French pathologist, anthropologist,
and pioneer in neurosurgery

Broca's early scientific works dealt with the histology of cartilage and bone, but he also studied the treatment of aneurisms, infant mortality, and cancer pathology where he helped introduce the microscope in cancer diagnosis. As a superb brain anatomist, he made important contributions to the understanding of the limbic system, but the field of study where Broca became famous in the history of medicine and the neurosciences was his discovery of the motor speech center (now known as Broca's area).
