Objectives:
Upon completion of the assigned reading, and study of lecture material, the successful
student should be able to:
1. Define and explain the initial sequential phases of human development including
fertilization, implantation, morula and blastula formation and gastrulation
2. Discuss the development of primary germ layers and body tissues and organs arising
from these
3. Describe the development, structure and function of the embryonic membranes,
umbilical cord and placenta
4. Define and apply correct terminology associated with human development
5. Build a foundation upon which to understand developmental biology materials
presented in conjunction with specific body systems
6. Create diagrams that help to explain human development
Prerequisite Advisory: Students should review mitosis and meiosis
(text chapter 2) prior to beginning this unit.
