References:
Text chapters: Tortora 3, 5, 12, 9, 16
Laboratory chapter: 2, 3
Objectives:
Upon completion of the assigned reading, laboratory exercise and study of lecture
material, the successful student should be able to:
1. Define a tissue
2. Classify adult tissues into four major tissue groups; epithelium, connective
tissues, muscle tissues, nervous tissues
3. With respect to epithelial tissues:
A. Identify common epithelial tissues using characteristics such as cell shape and number of layers
B. Describe the function and location of epithelial tissues
C. Discuss gland structure, secretory mechanisms and products
D. Describe the structure, function and location of epithelial tissues
4. With respect to connective tissues:
A. Identify four major subdivisions of this tissue group
B. Discuss common characteristics of all connective tissues
C. Describe the principal cellular and matrix components of Connect Tissue (CT) proper
D. Compare the two common components (cells and matrix) in all CT types and describe the appearance and function of each of these components in the various CTs
E. Compare histological components of compact and spongy bone
F. Compare origins, histology, functions and relative abundance of formed elements of blood
5. With respect to muscle tissues:
A. Identify the kinds, locations and function of each of the three muscle tissues
B. Describe similarities and differences in muscle tissue types
C. Organize the hierarchical relationships of the components of a typical skeletal muscle
D. Explain the appearance of striations in skeletal and cardiac muscle and how that appearance changes with function
E. Discuss the sliding filament model of muscle contraction
6. With respect to nervous tissues:
A. Describe the location and function of nervous tissue
B. Identify the specific morphological and functional characteristics of neurons and neuroglia
C. Explain the electrical and chemical mechanisms by which neurons communicate with
each other
7. Construct appropriate diagrams to assist in the explanation of relevant terms
8. Use the appropriate terminology relative to histology
