Objectives:

Upon completion of the assigned reading, laboratory exercise and study of lecture material, the successful student should be able to:

1. Describe how muscles and skeletal elements work together to create movement by applying the principles of simple machines such as the lever, wheel and pulley

2. Describe patterns of muscle fiber arrangement and how this pattern affects movement

3. Identify and locate the origin, insertion and action of the muscles listed in table 6.1

4. Define the role of prime mover, agonist, antagonist, synergist and fixator muscles

5. Describe how muscles are named and analyze and give examples of nomenclature applications

6. Use the correct terminology relative to the muscular system
