I am the second son of old Sir Rowland

Why would Shakespeare bring in this character?  It does add to the theme of union at the end of the play, bringing the entire family together.  He also ties up the loose end of what happened to Duke Frederick and how can the injustice of Duke Senior being usurped be righted by the end of the play.
