Reversal of earlier father/son with father loyal to Bolingbroke, son to Richard. Earlier Gaunt was willing to sacrifice his son into banishment, for the good of England. York is willing to sacrifice Aumerle (but he loses the title of Aumerle and becomes just Rutland; once again a son loses a title. This is the only comedy in the play. Aumerle has something in writing which condemns him.
