Overview (refer to the handout packet)

Now that you have completed the career assessment part of the class, it's time to explore the world of work. Please refer to the career research assignment in your handout packet. The purpose of the career research assignment is for you to learn more about career options based on your inventory results and your own interests.

This assignment generally requires three or more hours to complete. I strongly suggest that you do your research assignment using the resources at the Palomar College Career Center (Main Campus or Escondido)

You may use the Online References listed on the classs website to complete Assignment #6.


To start you will need your Strong TMReport and MBTITM Career Report. The Career Center staff will assist you. You do not have to turn in the print copy of the research assignment Part One only the Writing Assignment #6 below.

Palomar College Career Center

The Palomar College Career Center is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and on Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The center has 35 multimedia computers with internet access and several software and database programs. ERISS, Choices, Eureka and Discover are database programs that provide current information on careers, colleges, and college majors.

The Career Center offers an extensive reference library of academic, occupational and job search materials. Career reference guides include the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) and the Guide for Occupational Exploration. The library also includes career interest books, newsletters, brochures, and information on reference guides on networking, interviewing, resumes, and internet job search.



Research Assignment #6 (Refer to the example below)

Please send me an email, responding to the following items:

Choose one of the careers you researched, and complete the following questions.

1. List the job title.

2. What is the nature of the work? List in detail the tasks that are performed on the job.

3. List the education required and other qualifications to enter the occupation.

4. If college is necessary, what types of academic programs are available in San Diego and California? Use the Choices or Eureka software program in the Career Center to conduct search and list schools.

5. What are the earnings? List the starting salary and average salary with experience.

6. List at least two occupations that are related.

7. Will there be jobs in the future? List the national employment outlook and the factors influencing it.

8. List one source of additional information such as a professional association.

9. Using the San Diego Yellow Pages and Book of Lists, and various directories available in the Career Center list two names and addresses of employers of people who work in the occupation.

10. List one interesting fact that you learned about the occupation.

Spring 2002 - The final due date to email assignments is May 10, 2002.

 



Research Assignment Example

 

1. Dental Hygienist

2. Examine patient's teeth, record presence of diseases, clean teeth using instruments, apply fluorides, expose and take X-rays, and teach people how to practice good oral hygiene.

3. Dental Hygienists must be licensed by the state in which they practice, graduate from an accredited dental hygiene school and pass a written and a clinical exam - an associate degree program is needed.

4. Southwestern College offers the dental hygiene program in San Diego County.

5.Earnings vary by location and education/experience, average starting salary is $16.20 per hour - dental office, average salary with 3 years experience is $22.50 per hour, benefits depend on full-time employment.

6. Dental assistants, medical assistants, podiatry assistants, office nurses, and physician assistants.

7. Dental Hygiene is expected to grow much faster than average, demand stimulated by population growth, dentists retiring and declining enrollment in dental hygiene programs in the 1980šs.
