Overview

The purpose of this exercise is to compare the occupation you researched and your assessment results from Part A and B. You will need your writing and research assignments.

This exercise is a good way to evaluate how well the career you researched matches up with your skills, values, motivators, work environment.


1) On a piece of paper list your 12 preferred skills under one column. Refer to Writing Assignment #2 (Skillscan). List the skills required of the occupation under the other column. Refer to the answer to first question on your Research Assignment. Draw lines to show a match between the columns. Which skills match?

The example below shows 12 skills on one column and the skills required to be a teacher on the other column.



Organizing, evaluating, speaking before groups, motivating, problem solving, supervising, meeting the public all match well with teaching.


2) List your top five work values below. Refer to Writing Assignment #3 (Work Values Exercise). Indicate which values would be expressed in the occupation you researched. See example below.

3) How does the occupation fit with your personality preferences? Refer to Writing Assignment #4 (MBTI) Does the occupation fit allow you to work in your preferred work environment? Explain. See example below.

4) How does the occupation fit with your career motivators. Refer to Writing Assignment #5 (Strong) Would your career motivators be used in this occupation? Explain. See example below.

5) How does the Occupation Fit with the job tasks you would enjoy doing? Refer to Writing Assignment #5 (Strong) Would the job tasks be performed in this occupation. Explain. See example below.

6) How do the educational requirements of the occupation fit with your interest in pursuing additional training? Refer to Writing Assignment #5 (Strong). Do the educational demands of the occupation match with your learning environment scale score. Explain. See example below.

I would rate teaching as a "4" Very Good match with my skills, values and interests.

Writing Example (Teaching as the occupation)

1. Organizing, evaluating, speaking before groups, motivating, problem solving, supervising, meeting the public allmatch well with teaching.

2. Change and variety, freedom, influencing others. These values would be expressed in teaching. Adventure and Making Money. These values may not be expressed in teaching.

3. I prefer to work alone on projects and have quiet for concentration and I don't think most of the teaching day allows time for this. I do like to focus on people in my work environment, solve problems and focus on the future - these fit well with teaching.

4. My career motivators are helping others and using physical skill. Helping others is a big part of teaching, but using physical skill would not be used unless my job entailed physical education or coaching or vocational education.

5. Many of the job tasks I enjoy doing (based on the Strong Report) would be apart of a teaching position-evaluating student's progress, discussing problems with parents, teaching school students, public speaking and representing an organization to the community. Some tasks would not be involved in teaching such as direct program activities, plant and harvest plants, and use various hand and power tools.

6. My career motivators are helping others and using physical skill. Helping others is a big part of teaching, but using physical skill would not be used unless my job entailed physical education or coaching or vocational education.
