This is a photograph of effigist Jim McCarthy with three mortuary effigies he made in 1906 at the request of Edward H. Davis.  According to Davis, he was unable to buy the effigies out right, instead he had to sponsor the Karuk for those who were deceased but whose families were too poor to afford the expensive rites.  At the end of the Karuk instead of burning the effigies, Davis sold them to the Heye Museum in New York City.

The three effigies were welcomed home by 400 Kumeyaay and friends when they were returned by the Smithsonian Institution Museum of the American Indian in 1999.   They are now on display at the Southern Indian Health Center located in Alpine, CA.
