My Work Life

KatherineG.jpg (25126 bytes) I came to Palomar College in 1995 and have had the pleasure of being employed since then as the Library Manager.  My responsibilities include but are not limited to classified staff issues, facility and risk management, troubleshooting, campus liason, survey and research information, and representing the library to external organizations.

My Educational Background:

AA/Liberal Studies--Berkshire Community College
BA/Education--University of Massachusetts/Amherst
MLS--StateUniversity of New York--Center at Albany
This is the Palomar College Library.  We have 44,000 square feet on three floors and a collection of over 100,000 volumes.  There are over thirty full-time employees at the library who are assisted by a number of invaluable work/study students, interns, short-term hourly staff and volunteers.  This library serves not only as an academic library for Palomar's students, staff and faculty, but also as a community library for residents of the Palomar Community College District. libtrk.jpg (32511 bytes) Please notice that earlier I mentioned that  my tasks were not limited to those enumerated above. In the photo at the left, I am preparing to drive the contents of our new library site, the Ernest J. Allen Library, at our Escondido Center to their new home.  The venerable truck pictured is on loan from the Palomar College Facilities Department.

msjclib.jpg (29510 bytes) I am also employed as an adjunct librarian at Mt. San Jacinto College/Menifee Valley Campus Library. This is a small campus library but one rich for its size in resources. The library is loacted in the building at the left. At the right you see the librarian staff of the Menifee Valley Campus, Patricia, Sherri & me. msjclibs.jpg (30431 bytes)

Important Pet Information (because pets are important!)

Katherine_cat.jpg (32998 bytes) In the photo to the right you can see our two gray cats. They are brothers. The one on the left is Nigel, the one on the right is Rupert. These cats are two years old and display all the endearing feline qualities that keep catlovers bound to cats (i.e. flower arranging, houseplant care and watering, textile reworking. litter control and cat hair distribution).

Here Rupert (left) and Nigel (right) enjoy a glass of wine by the fireplace while they plan a trip (using the road atlas seen behind Nigel)as is their habit. winecats.jpg (38206 bytes)

Bart 1984-1996 In these pictures to the left and right you can see our late dogs. Fenwick is the Australian Shepherd and Bart is the Redbone hound. Born in 1984, these dogs were litter mates and enlivened our lives until their death Fenwick 1984-1998
rupfen.jpg (21224 bytes) Here Rupert is trying to convince Fenwick that cats aren't that bad. However, Fenwick remained indifferent for his whole life despite constant attention from both Rupert and Nigel.

Interests

Gardening

Gardening and herb culture are passions of mine. I am especially fond of old-time perennials.  Here is my former Whately, Massachusetts herb garden with Tansy, Artemesia, and Achillea in the foreground.

kitgard.jpg (44485 bytes) Cats and herb gardens seem to have a natural affinity for one another.   Here our late calico cat, Whately Herself , spends time supervising my garden work near some White Fringed Bleeding Heart.

Travels

Occasionally, we get to stray further from home and take in the sights in other parts of the universe.

This photo was taken of my husband and me on New Years Eve 1997 in New York's Times Square. We are trying to keep warm while waiting for the ball to drop. The temperature we later learned was minus three degrees. times.jpg (52171 bytes)
juliette_louise_house.jpg (51539 bytes) Here are some pictures of a December 1996 trip to Savannah, Georgia.   Top Left: Juliette Gordon Low House. Low was the founder of Girl Scouting in America. Shown below: Chet and me in Oglethorpe Park (below left) and with Ben along River Street: the Savannah River riverboat.(below right) in December 1996.

Local Interest

star.jpg (27488 bytes) Although it is always fun to travel, there are plenty of attractive pastimes right here in San Diego. Pictured at left is the Star of India which is located in San Diego's harbor.
In the photo at the right, Chet and I are enjoying the Cuyamaca Mountains in East County, San Diego. There are many places for hiking, camping, trail rides, and picnicking. There are always roadside stands selling fresh fruit and vegetables. sldcuy.jpg (53405 bytes)
