A win-win-win solution has just come down from the college administration for the situation where noncredit students have come to school only to find their classroom teacher has just called in sick.
Now, the college administration will allow these students to go into another same-level class as long as there is a willing teacher who offers to take them in, the classroom is large enough to accommodate the combined class, and it is only a one-day emergency arrangement. The working teacher must give an attendance list to the original teacher the next day so that the latter can still report those hours. This is a win for the college because we don't lose those hours for apportionment. It is a win for the studnets because their learning doesn't get interrupted. And it is a win for the absent teacher because gone are the feelings of guilt about having to turn away those eager students. Howerve, the absent teacher will still need to file his or her absence report and the contractual policy governing staff absences still stands.
I have shared two web articles introducing effective strategies for teaching reading on our dept. weblog.
