Module #3
THE  COLONIAL  PERIOD

I.       Prerequisites :   Admission to the course.

II.      Estimated Time :  1 - 2 Class sessions.

III.     Goal of the Module :  This module will provide learning activities
designed to enable the student to understand the significance of the British,
French, Dutch, Spanish and other European military conflicts for control of 
North America including : the impact on Indian tribes; militarily, economically,
politically and religiously.

IV.    Pre-assessment :  Before beginning this module, complete the paper and pencil test.

V.     Objectives :     After completing this module, the student will be able to :

           A.  Examine North American Imperial Wars :
                 1.  Delineate the 4 major conflicts for control of North America (1689-
                      1763) including the participants and results.
                 2.  Delineate the role played by Indians in these conflicts.
                 3.   Cite ate least two British leaders and two Indian leaders during
                       the French and Indian War.
                 4.   Define the British exterminationist policy and cite an example of
                       its use of biological warfare during these years.
                 5.   Delineate the role played by Pontiac in these events.

             B.  Analyze the Expanding French Trade and International Rivalries,
                   1615-1763 :
                   1.    Delineate the French fur trading system during this period.
                   2.    Identify the French-Natchez conflict.
                   3.    Identify Red Jacket.

              C. Examine English Colonial Expansion
                    1.   Delineate the participants in the Pequot War and the outcome.
                    2.    Identify King Philip, the Wampanoag.
                    3.    Delineate the results of King Philip’s War.

                D.  Examine the Dutch Colonial Expansion:
                     1.   Identify Henry Hudson and the Dutch East India Company.
                     2.   Identify the Wappinger Confederacy.
                     3.   Identify Governor Kieft and Peter Stuyvesant.
                     4.    Recall reasons for diminished Dutch colonial presence by
                            the 1640’s.
                     5.    Delineate the Pavonia Massacre.

                  E.   Examine Colonial Trade and Treaties
                      1.   List provisions of the 1763 Treaty of Paris.
                      2.   Identify the 1763 Proclamation Line and the colonial and
                            Indian responses to it.
                      3.   Delineate the formation of British Indian Bureaucracy to
                            implement British Indian policy.
                      4.   Cite an example of British/Indian Treaty making during
                            this period.

                    F.  Examine Indian Relations and the Revolutionary War :
                        1.   Identify Joseph Brant and his role in the war.
                        2.   Delineate the role of the Iroquois in the Revolution.
                        3.   Recognize the significance of the Articles of Confederation
                              upon Indian relations.
                        4.   Recall impact of Treaty of Paris of 1783 on Indian tribes.

VI.     Instructional alternatives :

          A.     Read the following :
                   1.  Text :  Edmunds, Chapters 3-6
                        Gibson, Chapters 4-11; and Mintz, Chapters 4-7.
