Module #4: THE  EARLY  NATIONAL  PERIOD

I.    Prerequisites :   Admission to the course.

II.   Estimated Time :  1 - 2 Class sessions.

III.  Goal of the Module :  This module will provide learning activities designed to
enable the student to understand the motivations behind the creation of 
federal Indian policy following the American Revolution and the various
cultural,economic and historic consequences of that policy made visible
in the War of 1812.  Also included will be an analysis of the fur trade and
its impact on North American Indian tribes.

IV.  Pre-assessment :  Before beginning this module, complete the paper
      and pencil test.

 V.  Objectives :  After completing this module, the student will be able to :

       A. Examine the fur trade, its growth and influence :
           1.  Identify Charles I and the Hudson Bay Company.
           2.  Identify the Northwest Company.
           3.  Identify John Jacob Astor.
           4.  Recall significance of the “rendezvous”.
           5.  Recognize the influence of the fur trade and tribal sovereignty.
           6.  List two reasons why fur companies used Indians as middlemen.
       
        B. Analyze the Indian in the New Republic (in the North) :
            1.  Recall the significance of the Treaty of Fort Stanwix in 1784.
            2.  Identify the Treaty of Fort Harmar and John Knox’s role in it.
            3.  Delineate what is meant by the “factory system”.
            4.  Delineate the role of military garrisons on the frontier.
            5.  Recall provisions of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and how
                 treaties were acquired.
            6.  Identify Little Turtle.
            7.  Identify General “Mad Anthony” Wayne and General St. Clair.
            8.  Recall provisions of the Treaty of Greenville.
            9.  Identify Tecumseh and William Henry Harrison.
          10.  Identify the Prophet.
          11.  Recall Tecumseh’s role in the War of 1812.
     
       C.  Examine the Indian in the Early Republic (in the South) :
             1.  Identify Alexander McGillivary.
             2.  Recall significance of the Treaty of Hopewell.
             3.  Recall the impact of the War of 1812 on southern tribes.
      
        D.  Delineate the federal government’s vocational training, “The Civilization
              Impulse” policy.

VI.  Instructional alternatives :

       A.  Read the following :
             1.  Text : Edmunds, Chapters 6-8
                  Gibson, Chapters 10-12 and Mintz, Chapter 8.

        B.  View the following videos at the Palomar College Library :

VII.  Post - assessment : Complete the objective test at the end of the next module.

 VIII. Remediation :  If mastery criteria is not achieved, check with the instructor
        to obtain the necessary alternatives to master the objectives.
