Module #5: REMOVAL AND AMERICAN EXPANSION

Time : 1 - 2 Class sessions.
III. Goal of the
Module : This module will provide learning activities designed
to enable
the student to understand the
history of Federal Indian policy from
the conclusion of the War of 1812 to the emerging
concentration policy of
the 1840’s, focusing extensively on the development of
“Indian Country”, the
government’s forced removal policy and the resulting impact on Indian cultures.
IV. Pre-assessment
: Before beginning this module, complete the paper and
pencil test.
V. Objectives
: After completing this module, the student will be able to :
A. Examine the development of the “Indian Country” concept :
1. Identify the British antecedents, especially the 1763 Proclamation
Line.
2. Analyze “Indian Country” in the early republic.
3. Identify Jefferson and Monroe’s role in this concept.
4. Recall how this concept led to the removal policy of the 1830’s.
5. Recall impact of “Indian Territory” in the 1840’s.
B. Delineate the role of Indian leaders in resisting Indian removal in the
old
Northwest :
1. Identify Black Hawk.
2. Identify the Treaties of Prairie du Chien.
C. Contrast at least two examples of forced tribal removal during the 1830’s.
D. Differentiate between Andrew Jackson’s Indian policy with that of his
predecessors.
1. Identify John Ross.
2. Identify John Marshall.
3. Identify Major Ridge and John Ridge and Elias Boudinot.
4. Analyze the impact of the Cherokee Nation vs. Georgia and
Worcester vs. Georgia.

took place
during this period.
