COURSE ASSIGNMENTS
Library
Discussion List Journal (50 points)
Students will subscribe to a library-related
listserv of their choice and monitor the topics discussed for a 4 week period (roughly September
5 - October 3). You must have an email
account (you may set one up by following that link, it's free) for this assignment. Please submit a journal which chronicles
the month of discussion topics and your experience. Journals should be 1-2
pages, and should be handed in on or before October 31.
Some questions to consider:
1. What kinds of things did the members of the list talk about?
2. Did the members stick to the topic of the list?
3. Were there heated arguments (flame wars)?
4. What was the volume of mail on the list? How many messages on the average day?
6. Did the members of the list seem knowledgeable?
7. What useful information, if any, did you obtain via the list?
8. What did you learn from subscribing to a list?
9. Will you remain subscribed to this list?
10. Did you post any messages to the list?
Current
Journal Readings (80 points)
Select (either through browsing or using an index) and locate 2 current
(1999-2001) journal articles on a library topic of your choice from any library
related journal. Read the article and write a brief summary,
including analysis and commentary on the topic(s) discussed in the
article. Summaries should be 1-2 paragraphs in length, must include a
citation for the selected article and may be handed in at any time during
the semester. (Hint: Don't procrastinate!)
LT100 WebBoard
(50 points)
Students will be presented with 3-4 discussion
starters throughout the course. Students will respond to the topic on the online
bulletin board within 2 weeks of topic posting by instructor.
Students are also encouraged to use the WebBoard for school-related questions,
discussions, and announcements.
Small Group
Instruction (50 points)
Students will sign-up for one small group instruction topic of their choice.
Each student will be responsible for leading 10 minutes of instruction on their
resource to 3-4 members of the class.
Nov. 28-- In Class (all students must be
present for this assignment to succeed!)
Choose from:
1. Search Engine searching tips (choose
one search engine)
2. Introduction
to Reader's Guide
3. Databases (select on resource: InfoTrac or ProQuest)
Hands-On
Tasks (150 points total)
Periodically, students will complete in-class assignments to assess new
skills learned and comprehension of ideas.
Resume (20
points)
Students will draft a resume after the class reviews library employment topics,
including resume and cover letter writing, interviews and job sources. Review
in class on Nov. 28.
Library Topic / History Report and
Presentation (150 points, combined)
