Student researching is like making a quilt. As a student researcher you must locate pieces of information. Generally you don’t discover new information but you will assemble what already exists into your own work. Your job is to locate, evaluate, and organize.

You may also compare the job of a student researcher to one who is listening to a conversation and attempting to locate the truth in what everyone is saying. Have you ever been to a family picnic when everyone is discussing a past event? Aunt Jane exaggerates, Uncle Joe sees threats everywhere and so on. You must determine what is true in what is being said.

A student researcher begins with an assignment. Write a paper about this topic. Give a speech about that topic,  The type of assignment that you have will determine what information you will need. Spending just a few minutes analyzing the topic of your assignment will help you successfully locate your information.

After you have analyzed your topic, you are ready to collect your information using a variety of resources. It is your job as you locate information, to become aware of the point of view, bias, and authority of the writer of the information. Remember the picnic with Aunt Jane and Uncle Joe.

Your final step in completing your assignment is synthesizing the information into your own words. If you use the precise words of one of your sources, you must tell the reader where the information came from. Your bibliography will list all the information sources that you used to complete your assignment.

Your end product whether it is a presentation, paper, or speech is the result of you successfully locating, evaluating, and organizing information.
