LT100 - SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION -- DUE NOV. 28, IN CLASS*

Assignment:

You will lead an informal, 10 minute instruction session for 3-4 members of the class on your selected information resource. Instruction using online resources will be done with a computer (in the BI area of our Library).

Select a resource from the sign-up list

§          Databases  (Infotrac or ProQuest)

§          Web Search Engines (choose one)

§          The Reader’s Guide

Guidelines:

You should spend about 30 minutes getting familiar with your selected resource, and another 15-30 minutes developing your 10 minute presentation (individual results may vary). Consider choosing a sample topic to explore.  Handouts are not necessary, so ask your students to take notes during your instruction.  The types of questions I want you to consider include those listed below.  You may use any other resources you can find to help you with this assignment.

ü        What are the different types of resources contained in your database? Why use it?

ü        Demonstrate effective searching tips and database features.

ü        Choose one search tool.  What does this resource cover?

ü        Demonstrate any special features (image search, translators, etc.).

ü        Focus on effective searching techniques.

ü        What is it?

ü        How and why do we use it?

ü        How do you get the actual materials it cites?

*For this assignment to succeed, everyone must be present on Nov. 28 for the entire class.  If this is impossible, you will have to complete an alternate assignment for credit and give at least two weeks notice of your intended absence from Nov. 28’s class.
