Olde Colonies Web Page

Your next major assignment is to prepare an essay of 4 - 6 paragraphs that discusses some significant characteristics of one [only one!] of the two early regions of English colonization in North America:  Virginia or New England.  This essay will be published as a web page.

Possible Points:  0 - 100

Due Date:  Wednesday, November 13

During the week of October 14 -18 you should skim the web sites and readings associated with these two topics, so that by Monday, October 21 you will have selected the topic that you will work on.  A discussion board will be created for each topic so that you can exchange comments, observations, and questions about your topic.

You are encouraged to search for additional primary document resources on the web, and to post information on those resources on the topical discussion board.  It is not necessary for you to every item listed below in the sources.  It is important for you to read at least four (4) primary sources for your report

Life in 17th c. Colonial Virginia

Assignment:

To prepare an essay that presents your description/analysis of the political, social, and economic characteristics of the colony of Virginia during the 17th century, written from the perspective of a historian of the early 18th century

Your essay/web page will be based upon your analysis of the sources available to you, and illustrated by your description of aspects of daily life and political events, in particular those specific events described in the texts, documents, and web sites available to you.

When navigating the web site "Secrets of the Dead" web site related to the film and listed below, be sure to investigate the following areas: "Background," "Clues and Evidence," "Interview," and "Resources".

Most important for the success of your essay will be to present  examples of the thoughts and experiences of 17th-century colonists, through description and analysis of several of the primary resources available at the Virtual Jamestown site; this site provides records in both the original and modern English.  Another useful web site is The Mariners Museum, with a great deal of material on the Colonial history of the Chesapeake Bay area, including primary documents.  Here you should in particular click on the link to "John Smith: A Map of Virginia, 1612".

Significant time will be devoted to this exercise in class.  The film: "Death at Jamestown" will be shown in class on Monday, October 21.  Please complete as much of the research from the sources listed here as possible by Monday, October 21.
