comparative study of the exploration, conquest, and settlement of the Americas
by the Spanish, Portuguese, French, Dutch, and English nations through the 18th century.
Significant attention is
also given to the history of pre-Columbian Indian cultures such as the Aztec,
Maya, Inca, Huron,
and Iroquois, and their relations with European settlements, the development of
the European
nation-state and the resulting imperial rivalries in the Americas, and the
formation of colonial institutions and the stresses on those institutions in the
18th century. |

comparative history of the American nations in the 19th and 20th centuries with
emphasis on
themes of political development and social and economic change. Particular focus
on the development of the nations of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Mexico,
and the United States, as well as inter-American relations in the
twentieth century. |
