History 140 - History of the Americas to 1800
Class # 71740 - 3 units

What is a "Hybrid" Course?

A hybrid course is simply a course that meets at least 50% "live" in a campus classroom and up to 50% online for the hours required each week of the college term.

Special features of these 3-unit courses include:

  • At least one meeting per week in the Academic Technology Computer Classroom, room LL 109, on the first floor of the Palomar College Library, San Marcos campus.
    • In this classroom, each student will have access to a new Dell computer for class projects and assignments.
  • Up to half of the weekly materials and assignments for the course will be posted on the course Blackboard site, a password secure web site.
    • As a consequence, the on-campus meeting time is reduced by at least 35%.
  • Each student will create a web site for posting their course projects, and will be trained in the use of the following programs for their history projects.
    • Blackboard
    • Microsoft FrontPage 2003
    • Microsoft PowerPoint 2003/2007
  • The course will focus on the development of four major projects to be published on each student's personal web page.

Benefits of a Hybrid Course
There are several advantages to a hybrid course:

  • Gradual introduction to online courses  For those students who want a gradual introduction to online education and courses, the hybrid format provides an introduction to the technology of online courses with a weekly "live" presence of  your instructor.
  • Flexible course assignments  With a course structured around computer projects, students have the entire term to complete all of their assignments.
  • Computer Availability  For those students without home computers or home access to a high-speed internet service, all members of the hybrid classes have access to new Dell computers in the classroom, with the fastest internet access available on campus.  Students can also access these computers when the hybrid course does not meet.
