First Midterm

First midterm covers: chapters 1-3 of Janson

The first midterm will consist of three parts. For Part One, you will be shown ten slides. I will ask you to write down one bit of information about each slide. Typically, I'll ask for artist, title, period/style, or culture. Part Two will consist of true/false and matching questions. For Part Three, you will be given three essay topics. You will pick one and write a short essay.

For the actual midterm, be sure to bring a #2 pencil and scantron #886-E to class.

Part I (20 pts.): Slide Identifications

Directions: For the midterm in class, you will be shown TEN slides. Each slide will be on the screen for THIRTY SECONDS.

(Here, I've included ten images, all from your textbook, and all works of art that we've gone over in class. For each image, I ask for one bit of information. This is the same TYPE of information I'll ask on exam day. ONE of these images will also be shown during the actual midterm, although you will not get the same question I'm asking of you here. Click on an image below to see the work of art, and try to answer the question within 30 seconds. Click on "answer" for the correct response.)

Slide #1 | Slide #2 | Slide #3 | Slide #4 | Slide #5 | Slide #6 | Slide #7 | Slide #8 | Slide #9 | Slide #10

Directions: Choose the best answer for each question.

(These are the same TYPES of essay questions you'll see on the exam. None of these questions will appear on the exam.)

1. Under which royal couple did the art and culture of ancient Egypt change dramatically? Explain the cultural change, and then, using specific examples, describe how this change is evident in the art of the time. Stylistically, how are figures depicted? How is this different from the art that came before and after this pharaoh?

2. Discuss the burial practices of at least two ancient peoples. What similarities and what differences are evident? How do these practices reveal the peoples' conception of the afterlife?

3. Compare and contrast a ziggurat with a pyramid. Pick specific monuments and identify them by name and location. Which culture made each monument? What is the function of each? How are they similar? In what ways are they different?
