The second midterm will consist of three parts. For Part One, you will be shown ten slides. I will ask you to write down one bit of information about each slide. Typically, I'll ask for artist, title, period/style, or culture. Part Two will consist of true/false and matching questions. For Part Three, you will be given three essay topics. You will pick one and write a short essay.
For the actual midterm, be sure to bring a #2 pencil and scantron #886-E to class.
Directions: For the midterm in class, you will be shown TEN slides. Each slide will be on the screen for THIRTY SECONDS.
(Here, I've included ten images, all from your textbook, and all works of art that we've gone over in class. For each image, I ask for one bit of information. This is the same TYPE of information I'll ask on exam day. ONE of these images will also be shown during the actual midterm, although you will not get the same question I'm asking of you here. Click on an image below to see the work of art, and try to answer the question within 30 seconds. Click on "answer" for the correct response.)
Directions: Choose the best answer for each question.
(Again, these are the same TYPES of questions you'll get on the midterm. These exact questions will not be on the test. Click on "answer" for the correct response. I've only included 5 questions here, but you'll have 20 questions on the actual test.)
1. Which of the following periods of Greek art is most associated with black- and red-figured vase painting?
2. Which of the following is not true of Etruscan tombs?
3. Cycladic figures __________.
4. What does the scene on the breastplate of the Augustus of Primaporta depict?
5. The Greeks preferred to decorate their temples with actual, historical events rather than with mythological scenes. True or false?
Directions: Pick ONE of the following essay topics to write about. At the beginning of your essay, WRITE DOWN THE NUMBER OF THE ESSAY YOU HAVE PICKED (1, 2, or 3). Your essay should be well organized and written in complete sentences.
(These are the same TYPES of essay questions you'll see on the exam. None of these questions will appear on the exam.)
1. Pick four ancient Greek works, each from a different period, and use them to discuss the development of style in Greek art. In what ways do early works look different from later works? Is there a change in subject matter, too? Be sure to explain why each of the works you chose is representative of its respective period.
2. How does Roman sculpture differ from Greek sculpture? Although the Romans loved everything Greek, there are some significant changes in their approach to sculpture. Cite at least two Greek and two Roman sculptures, and discuss their differences (not similarities) in terms of subject matter and style.
3. Describe the typical Etruscan temple. How did it change from Greek temples. Which Etruscan elements were borrowed by the later Romans for their temples?
