Early vs. Late Rembrandt

 Early Style, c. 1622-1642

Late Style, c. 1643-1669

Figures:

 Many figures. Single, or just a few, figures.

Composition:

Crowded, dynamic. Figures isolated, pushed back into middleground.

Colors:

Bright, vivid. Dull, muddy browns and golden yellows.

Lighting:

Focused spotlight, sometimes figures in foreground in silhouette (repoussoir), chiaroscuro. Still a spotlight, less figures in silhouette.

Brushstrokes:

Detailed, very finished. Thick impasto, rougher looking.

Mood:

Dynamic, lots of activity. Quiet, contemplative, spiritual.
